Program Description

Under the provincial BC Early Hearing Program (BCEHP) all newborns in Interior Health can now have their hearing screened shortly after birth, either in hospitals or the community.

Who can use this program?

Early hearing screening is available to all babies born in BC.

How do I use this program? Do I need a referral?

If you are giving birth in the hospital, a screener will visit you and do the hearing test right there in the hospital.  If you miss the screener’s visit, they will contact you to arrange for you to bring your baby into the clinic to have him/her tested there.

What services are offered?

The Early Hearing program provides newborn hearing screening, diagnosis and intervention upon birth.  If your baby did not pass the screen, they may be sent for further testing.

If a child is found to have a permanent hearing loss, the BCEHP currently provides hearing aids as required, along with intervention and communication support services. The program is available for children from birth to the age of five.

All services are FREE.
